The honest answer is that some parts of legal work are shifting, some are not, and the difference matters more than any general prediction. The third area is less glamorous but often more valuable: managing the workflow of a practice. Tools like Clio Duo, MyCase IQ, and Smokeball are adding AI layers to case management - drafting client update emails from file notes, summarizing long email threads into a timeline, suggesting deadlines based on jurisdiction, and catching calendaring conflicts.
Predictive analytics is a narrower story. Products like Lex Machina look at historical data - which motions judges grant, how long certain case types take, what settlement ranges look like in a given court - and give you statistical context. This is not fortune-telling. It's the same kind of information a senior partner holds in their head after thirty years of practice, made available earlier in your career. Used carefully, it helps with litigation strategy, fee estimates, and client conversations about expectations. Used carelessly, it gives false precision to decisions that still depend on facts these models cannot see.
The right mindset is modest. AI in case management reduces friction. It does not replace the weekly review where you look at your matters, think about what each client actually needs next, and decide where your attention goes.
